Cary, I hear you man. In NO way am I saying that distributors should be an END in themselves, only a means to an end, and one of many at that. In fact, in the column I talk about hitting comic stores to peddle your wares. I also talk about Ingram and suggest selling books to non-comic-store stores.

I skipped the cons because the focus of the column was "HOW DO YOU GET YOUR BOOK INTO COMIC SHOPS?" That, and I assumed that most struggling just starting out creators already KNOW that cons are your bread and butter.

As for Renaissance Festivals and the like, well, again they didn't fall into the into-a-comic-shop train fo thought. That and I never even thought of them, so good point there. In fact, you just inspired me in a similar, but totally separate vein. My dad owns a candy store, an ice-cream parlor, a candy mold making company, and a candy distributor company. He also co-owns a lollipop factory. Not only can I have him take my books (as soon as I finish one) to Candy Shows, I can have him make molds of my characters and/or logos to sell/promote the book. My characters on lollipops! THINK about it! I can also use his distribution company to get my books into candy stores, bakeries, and such in the tri-state area.

    Cary, you're a genius!

And I guess we're gonna have some talking to do, Seb...

    wow! Yep.

That's what I was sayin at the end o my column. This stuff comes up and everyone is wondering how to get their books into comic shops, but really what people need to be worrying about is getting their comics to READERS.

CM definitely sounds like another good option... the fact that the big D is raising their mins means that fewer publishers are going to take a chance on a book... Of course it might mean more shops and publishers will turn to Haven. Who knows?!?!?! All I know is that I want to get my books published and actually seen, not just to get my name out there, but because they're good stories... That's the hard thing.

OOOooooooo...it hit me! You guys (Bard, Forby, Matt, Cary, and Tyler specifically) have given me an idea..a semi-good idea (we'll know how good it is after Forby gets a hold of it) that I will use as the focus for next week's column!

Matt, if we end up writing about the same thing next week, that will be some freaky kismet, and we shall be forced to acknowledge our psychic link and team up for the advancement of small press creators.

OOOooo that just gave me a second semi-good (this one I know has some initial structure holes that Forby will quickly drive a truck though) idea, that we could kick around and see if it can be turned into something.

HMMmmm, I think I just got the next two weeks columns outta your replies!

Thanks gang! I love this community feel! This interactive column formation!

    Yay us!

lol yeah can't wait to see what comes next after this discussion! hehe

i think Matt hit it on the head for sure. it's about getting the book into the hand of the reader. doesn't matter how you do that, only that you DO. comic stores are great. i love em. but they aren't going to constitute your bulk in terms of sales. too many people are walking into those stores looking for the latest Wolverine or Spiderman. i walked into my LCS last night and this guy is TOTALLY indy friendly. he has a standing offer to carry anything i put out. and yet do you know where the indy rack is? all the way at the end of the comics, and not well organized or displayed. what it looks like is a second hand rack of stuff they'd return if they could. which sucks. and it's not the owner. he does try. but it's a symptom of the mentality. you have mainstream comics, and you have Indy comics and never the twain shall meet. once more indy folks realize they're not competing with the mainstream folks, we're gonna have something of a revolution on our hands. but i'd say that's a good thing.
